In December of 2011 UMRadio published an interview with Susan Wise Bauer.

Shortly following its release, we received many interesting questions as well as several requests to invite Dr. Bauer on again for more! This response clearly demanded a follow up and so now I am honored to present to you the follow up interview in which Dr. Bauer was good enough to join me once again to address more of the thoughtful inquiries regarding classical education, home education and more!

Enjoy!

Interview with director Vicky Abeles
Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

In Spring of 2011 I excitedly interviewed John Taylor Gatto. Because his message is timeless and absolutely worth repeating - I bring it back to you again to listen, learn and appreciate the wisdom and work of the true pioneer of exposing the ugly truth about compulsory schooling.

After being named New York City Teacher of the Year on three occasions, John Taylor Gatto quit teaching on the OP ED page of the Wall Street Journal in 1991 while still New York State Teacher of the Year, claiming that he was no longer willing to hurt children. Later that year he was the subject of a show at Carnegie Hall called "An Evening With John Taylor Gatto," which launched a career of public speaking in the area of school reform, which has taken Gatto over a million and a half miles in all fifty states and seven foreign countries. In 1992, he was named Secretary of Education in the Libertarian Party Shadow Cabinet, and he has been included in Who's Who in America from 1996 on. In 1997, he was given the Alexis de Tocqueville Award for his contributions to the cause of liberty, and was named to the Board of Advisors of the National TV-Turnoff Week.

His books include: Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling (1992); The Exhausted School (1993); A Different Kind of Teacher (2000); and The Underground History Of American Education (2001) of which the special author's Pre-Publication Edition (2000) is for sale at this Web site.

In this episode I had the pleasure of Brett Veinotte’s company once again for another insightful discussion. In our conversation, we probe the question of nutritional value and substance in the information being administered in school under the term “education” and how this packaged, preservative rich diet has effected humanity. I am confident that you will enjoy listening in to this episode wherein we don’t feed you all the answers, but introduce lot of new, important and useful questions!

I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy conversation with Brett on several occasions before which are available at www.unpluggedmom.com

I am especially excited to bring you this 2 part, all-in-one episode of UMRadio because in it, I had the most wonderful time talking with author, philosopher and fellow podcast host, Stefan Molyneux, of Freedomain Radio. Recording for both Freedomain and UMRadio, Stefan and I discussed school, education, parenting, society and... yes... for those of you waiting with baited breath, wondering whether I would bring up the A word with Mr. Libertarian Anarchy himself - yes, we talked about politics and the anarchist movement. It may not be what you think though so give it a listen! And if you are not one of the cross-over listeners and you haven't a clue what I'm talking about - give it a listen anyway! I guarantee you will find nourishing food for thought, and interesting points on which to ponder while you listen in on our discussion. In part one, I ask Stefan a few questions about his quest, his work and his thoughts on education, parenting and politics. In part two, we pick up where we left off and then the tables turn. I have to say, that of all the interviews I have done in the last couple of years (and technically this was not really an interview as much as a discussion) I have never been asked the kind of introspective questions that Mr. Molyneux asked and while I was surprised by the nature of the questioning, when it was said and done I was both honored and delighted! I won't give too much away, you'll have to listen... but suffice it to say that you will learn more about Laurette Lynn than you may have wanted to know ;P I think I may have learned a bit more about myself! Do I really need to mention that this officially bumps itself into the top 3 of my favorite conversations? (well there I mentioned it anyway). I look forward to speaking with Stefan again soon to learn, ponder, philosophize and getting into more nitty-gritty on other relevant topics. If you prefer the video version, they are available below. I do not typically do video (dislike looking at my self I guess, I don't know) but because Stefan usually publishes his show with video, I cooperated. smiley It's exactly the same as the audio, only you get some visual too, if you like that sorta thing. Click here for Part I on Youtube Click here for Part II on Youtube *It's worth noting that while this is published as a single episode, parts one and two were recorded separately, about a week apart. I'm not entirely sure why that is important, but it seems like it's something I should mention - so there it is! For more information on Stefan Molyneux and Freedomain Radio click here!

Out of Platos Cave with Paul Verge

What has the mis-education from the school system done to us? What is Plato's Cave and how can we find our way out? What is the point of OWS and why should we even care? What is "Believer Beware"? In what way was 9/11/01 an American catharsis? Where are we headed? How many of us are truly "unplugged" and how are we changing politically, socially, spiritually? This and so much more...

Originally scheduled for mid November I simply had to push this one up. I truly am at a loss for words to describe just how awesome this conversation was. I truly enjoyed talking with Mr. Verge and I know that you will derive a great deal of thought-provoking self-discussion from this next 90 minutes. Listen up...

Back in Spring of this year, I was very pleased to meet and talk with filmmaker and director, Jeremy Stuart. Jeremy is the co-founder of 3Story films and he and his team have been working on developing what I know will be a spectacular documentary on home education. Class Dismissed promises to be the first education documentary of it’s kind by taking a unique approach to delivering the positive message of independent learning to a mainstream audience.

I was excited to have another opportunity to speak with Jeremy for more information and updates about the film project. Listen in to learn about Jeremy, the project and how you too can get involved and help support Class Dismissed!
